Starlink Speed Test Tasmania

As Tasmanian’s move towards a more suitable internet for our state, Starlink has become the number one choice for high-speed and stable internet for all areas of Tasmania, and now that it has completed its beta stage, it has opened its services up to new customers.

I have been using my Starlink for three weeks now (as of the date of this article) and the speeds which I have achieved have varied but overall, very impressive.

First, I should point out that the latency or ping to the nearest relay node (mine always connects to Sydney) is anywhere from 38ms to 58ms. This is fine for everyday use and even video conferencing, but online gamers seem to have an issue when they are used to 20ms or lower for FPS games. Starlink claims it is working on the latency and claims the new rectangle dish has reduced latency.

As I have the traditional round “Dishy” dish, then all my testing is recorded from this device from the day it arrived with the dish placed on my back lawn to the time of roof mounting a few days later.

I use Ookla Speed test app on my phone and my PC. I have set the app on my phone to display the results in Megabytes (MB/s) as opposed to the PC displaying Megabits (Mbps).

It is also worth noting that to get a Megabytes (MB/s) result from a Megabits (Mbps) reading is to simply devide the Mbps result by 8 to get the MB/s result.

300 Mbps = 37.5 MB/s

Now, what should be noted here is that the speed test we have done at various times of the day and night, and peak times for the internet must be considered as there is a finite bandwidth for the service but with over 100 Mbps in peak time is surly acceptable.

Speed testing on multiple connections from different sources around the world pose no issues.

Lastly, speed tests can be done back-to-back and have completely different results so in the end you do get fantastic speeds for Starlink in Tasmania. Download speed is clearly the winner while upload lags well behind compared to even the current FTTN connections in Tasmania.
